ATO Scam Alert

The Australian Taxation Office warn against new ATO impersonation scams currently circulating.

The first of which, is an email containing a link for the recipient to reconfirm their details for their myID login. This email appears as if it has come from the ATO and is taking advantage of the recent change of ‘myGovID’ to ‘myID’ to trick the recipient to click on the link and enter their login details.

The other is an email appearing to be from the ATO, falsely advising the recipient that their taxable income has been recalculated and they are due to receive compensation. The person is encouraged to reply to the email and provide personal information and copies of formal identification documents such as their drivers licence, tax file number and Medicare details.

Once the scammers have this information, they can use it to commit tax fraud in your name, steal your superannuation or even sell your identity to organised crime groups.

These scam emails are becoming more difficult to identify so it is important to be aware, and if in doubt, it is best to either contact our office or phone the Australian Taxation Office to check.
